Floods in Kinshasa: President Félix Tshisekedi orders the demolition of illegal buildings

17/04/2025

An emergency meeting was convened this Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at the African Union City. President Félix Tshisekedi's gaze was grave: the flooding in Kinshasa had reachedcritical levels. Ministers, provincial authorities, and municipal officials were invited to an exceptional meeting to take stock and outline immediate responses to the crisis.

At the heart of the discussions was the heavy and painful human toll. Patrick Muyaya, Minister of Communication and Media and Government Spokesperson, stated: "75 lives lost, more than 11,000 people affected, spread across four temporary shelters." These figures reflect the scale of the tragedy.

The day before, a crisis unit had already been held under the leadership of the Prime Minister. The objective: to identify urgent needs and anticipate concrete responses. In the coming hours, measures will be made public, including the announced demolition of illegal buildings in non-aedificandi zones [lands prohibited for construction, often high-risk].

Closing the session, President Félix Tshisekedi praised the mobilization of government teams and emphasized the importance of maintaining constant support for affected families. A call for solidarity, but also for rigor in managing this disaster, was also made.
